A Bit About Us
NOD Apiary Products Ltd. (NOD) is a Canadian company formed in 1997 by beekeepers. Honeybee health is our focus. The founders of NOD saw formic acid as the active ingredient most likely to be able to be developed into a practical, sustainable miticide for the beekeeping industry. Properly formulated, it could control the varroa and tracheal mites, protect the image of honey as a wholesome food and leave no residues in the hive components. In 2005 NOD received its pesticide registrations for Mite Away II in Canada and the United States.
Beekeepers are able to rely on Mite Away II. However, there were some barriers to use to overcome. Mainly we wanted to get away from the requirement of a rim so that it would be more attractive to migratory beekeepers, a large potential customer base in the US. We also wanted a product that could be used anytime in the active beekeeping season, including when honey supers are in place.
NOD continued to work on developing formic acid delivery systems in beehives. The Mite Away Quick Strip is the result.
Desperate Times: Honey bees are in trouble. Around the world the varroa mites have developed resistance to conventional products. NOD is in the process of taking its products into the world marketplace to meet the need.
NOD has developed and sells other bee protection products: the Bee Cozy, a winter wrap, and the Bee Brief, a grab, drop and go nucleus colony box for quick queen rearing and introduction.
